Zipcar has long billed its car-sharing service as a money saver for consumers, rolling the cost of insurance, gas, maintenance and car payments into subscription and hourly rental fees. So at the tail end of a recession, has Zipcar — which has told us it aims to “cross over to profitability” in 2010, and eventually go public — seen consumers flock to its service?

According to CEO Scott Griffith, who spoke on a panel today at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, Zipcar saw a drop-off in what he calls discretionary trips — weekend getaways to wine country or the ski slopes, for example. “Some of that is coming back this year,” Griffith said, but the recession took a bite out of longer trips. On average, he said subscribers rent Zipcar vehicles for four hours, and drive about six miles for every hour they have the car checked out.

Still, Griffith said that 10-year-old Zipcar’s membership grew by about 25 percent last year, excluding membership in cities where Zipcar launched new fleets during the year. Those newer cities will offer a real test for whether Zipcar can sustain a much larger footprint nationally and internationally, or if its user base is limited to more niche markets including the cities and university campuses where it has already found success.

According to forecasts from research firm Frost & Sullivan, the number of drivers using car-sharing networks increased 117 percent between 2007 and 2009 in North America. Within five years, the firm expects to see 4.4 million people in North America and 5.5 million people in Europe (where Zipcar hopes to expand its presence beyond London) sign up for car-sharing programs, more than tripling membership from 2009.

In addition to general growth, Griffith noted another shift in Zipcar’s user base: It’s getting older. After trending upward every year for the last five years, he said the average age of a Zipcar member is now over 30 years. About two-thirds of the company’s 360,000 active users are under age 35, according to Griffith, but the company is bringing in “more and more second-car users.”

In other words, it’s not just college students using the Zipcar vehicles that are available for a discount on campus, but also families that occasionally want access to a different car (something larger for hauling kids or furniture, for example, or a sportier model than the family minivan — Griffith said the Mini Cooper is the most frequently requested model).

“Lots of people sell or don’t buy cars as a result of our business,” Griffith said. “Or we become their second car, their fractional second car,” since users only pay to “own” a Zipcar vehicle for a fraction of the time they’d pay to buy or lease a personal vehicle.

It’s that reduction in vehicles on the road (about 20 for every car in the fleet) that forms the basis for car sharing as a greener transportation option, said Griffith. The Toyota Prius is a popular model among users, said Griffith, and Frost & Sullivan anticipates plug-in vehicles will make up one in every five new vehicle purchases for car-share fleets by 2016. But the most important factor in the “net sustainable benefit,” of car sharing, said Griffith, is reducing personal vehicle ownership. It matters less whether it’s an SUV or a hybrid that consumers borrow for a few hours, and more that the car is eliminating the need for 20 additional cars.

Economically, it works out to be a good deal, said Griffith, since most Americans’ cars end up sitting unused “for 90 percent of the time or more.” Citing census data, he said households with Zipcar membership spend only about 5 percent of their income on transportation, compared to as much as 19 percent in a typical U.S. household.

The company may not have seen the last of the recession’s effects, however. New costs could arise as major partners wrestle to balance their budgets. That’s on the table in Washington, D.C., at least, where the 2011 budget proposal submitted by Mayor Adrian Fenty this month includes $275,000 in new fees for Zipcar to use parking spaces on district streets.

"Boychik, wake up!” Jacob (Len Lesser), Ralph’s Marxist grandfather, exhorts him early on. “Be something! Make your life something good…. Go out and fight so life shouldn’t be printed on dollar bills.”

It won’t be easy to heed such advice in a world that the playwright understood only too well wasn’t built for idealists. This is what keeps Odets’ play fresh 75 years later — a keen awareness of our patchwork morality. People are shown to be a mixed-bag, and progress has its work cut out for itself trying to transcend our foible-ridden human nature.

Moe Axelrod (Daniel Reichert), the Bergers’ cynical border who lost his leg in World War I, provides an outside perspective on the family meshugas. He is hardly a disinterested observer, with his antagonistic passion for Hennie, who marries Sam Feinschreiber (David Lengel) under false pretenses masterminded by her mother.

This turns out to be a fortuitous advantage for Ralph after Bessie joins forces with her big-shot brother Morty (Alan Blumenfeld) in an unholy alliance that threatens to snatch the young man's tragic inheritance. Moe doesn’t want to see Ralph's options narrowed. Not that permanent escape is ever a real possibility in Odets’ universe — but living more authentically is the next best thing.

The production hits the “period” flavor a bit hard. Scenic designer Michael C. Smith arranges Bessie’s spotless living- and dining-room furniture with vintage flair. But the women are such “noivus” wrecks and the men chomp slang like thick pastrami sandwiches. At times, especially in the first act, the milieu can seem like an ill-fitting Salvation Army suit.

But that’s my only qualm about the acting, which animates the characters’ conflicts in their many shades of gray. Flaws aren’t whitewashed and virtues are allowed to skulk alongside them unextolled.

Bessie is one of Odets’ most memorable characters, a ferocious maternal force who’s as protective as she is stunting. Strang portrays her in a way that lets you see how Bessie, at least in her own mind, is constantly fighting for survival. Even at her most perverse, when she turns her fury on Jacob, breaking her father’s beloved Caruso records, it’s clear that she’s finally taking revenge on all the men around her whose heads have been in the clouds while she’s been stretching the food money and shuffling bill payments.

Long before feminism made it a catchphrase, “Awake and Sing!” revealed just how political the personal can be. And though its language often sounds dated, the play’s discordant notes continue to speak to the turbulent longing in our national soul.

Scratched surfaces are not uncommon in furniture; normal wear and tear on pieces like dressers and end tables is bound to happen. There are some ways to cover scratched furniture that you can do at home for little money.

End tables and night stands are easy enough to cover. Have a piece of glass cut with or without beveled edges. Arrange photos on the table and then set the glass. Or, use silk flowers to make a floral arrangement on the tabletop before positioning the glass. Other ideas are leaves, fabric, wallpaper, or even an old poster. Cut the poster and arrange a photo mat around it before placing the glass on top. Do the same with a dresser, coffee table, kitchen table or counter top.

Something similar can be done with a small table and a very large picture frame. Remove the prop and hardware from the back to allow the frame to lay flat on the table. The frame must be the same size or slightly larger than the table, not smaller. Place pictures, fabric or wallpaper in the frame and glue the frame to the table or simply lay it on top.

Kitchen tables can always use a table pad since they seem to scratch easier than most other surfaces in the home. No matter what shape your table it's easy to make a protective cover that will hide scratches, if needed, or to keep the table from getting marred. Get thick cardboard to begin the cover. Try a cardboard supply place or ask at a retail store that sells large appliances to see if you can get a large piece. If not, piece a couple of small sections together with strong tape.

Cut the cardboard to the shape of the table. Cut a piece of quarter-inch foam the shape of the table as well. Use spray adhesive to attach the foam to the cardboard. If using cardboard sections that have been taped together the foam will also help hold them together. Cut a piece of fabric or vinyl to cover the cardboard and foam. Cut the material about three inches longer, all the way around, than the table.

Lay the fabric on the table, right side downward, then place the cardboard on the fabric with foam side facing cloth. Spray adhesive will help affix the material to the cardboard. Start at one end (if it's a circle, just start at any side) and glue the fabric partially. Go to the opposite side and do the same, pulling taut. Clothes pins or clamps will help to hold the fabric in place during the gluing. Tack each of the four sides, in the middle, then go back to do the sections in between. This will ensure you get a good snug fit before gluing all the fabric.

If you will be using the new tabletop, then sometimes removing it, make it where it will fold. To do so, use sections of cardboard that are upholstered individually. The sections can be in halves, quarters or even thirds. After each piece is covered align them on the table, upside-down. Butt the sections tightly together then use spray adhesive to attach wide ribbon to the backside of the segments, all the way across. When you get to each place where the cardboard is split allow an inch or so of slack in the ribbon before continuing to glue to the next section. This will allow enough slack in the ribbon to let the cardboard fold flat but will hold the sections together.

To make the table or other surface look a little more elegant try placing a piece of lace on the surface and allowing it to hang down a little for a dresser, a lot for a table. Cover the cardboard piece with fabric, rather than vinyl, and lay it atop the lace. This is a beautiful look for a girl's room, any dresser, a coffee table or kitchen table.

Don't live with marred surfaces in your home, hiding them with towels and spreads. Make a cover that will last, prevent scratches, and still look good.
